Tokyo Bar

Just a five minute walk from my apartment, in the pretty neighborhood of Tribeca, lies Japanese comfort food heaven Tokyo Bar. Omu-rice, curry and pasta in ketchup – all Japanese reinterpretations of foreign cuisines – make up the bulk of the menu here, items you wouldn't expect to see on a Japanese menu unless, of course, you lived in Japan. I can see all the Asian gay guys and Yelp frequenters flocking over in three... two... one...

EVA Solo Grill Table

The season for outdoor picnics and grilling is upon us, and after several barbecues with friends and witnessing their somewhat feeble attempt at lugging large grills around the park, I stumbled upon the cutest grill I have ever seen: The EVA Solo Grill Table. Its modest footprint only allows it to be enjoyed by a small party, yet what it lacks in size it makes up in portability and looks. Perfect for urban dwellers wanting to host a rooftop soirée.

Got Milk?

For reasons still unsure to me – laziness, I suppose – I stopped drinking milk when I started my undergraduate studies way back when. I don't know what prompted me to suddenly stop consuming dairy; at a nice 6'0" I've obviously benefited from drinking three glasses of milk a day. And then I went to college, stopped drinking dairy, and tossed my ability to digest lactose out the window. It was a sad time indeed. I mean, those of us who are lactose intolerant know all too well the consequences of consuming a cup of milk, a scoop of ice cream, a block of cheese. It isn't very pretty. You spend the rest of the night traversing from your bed to the bathroom.

Which is why I was a little apprehensive about purchasing a carton of lactose-free milk. I saw it sitting quite idly in the dairy section of the supermarket aisle, unassumingly, like a stoic monk in the middle of meditation. My eyes hovered over the carton's label, widening at the graphic that read "100% Lactose-Free." Memories of my last attempt at reacquainting myself with a glass of milk flashed across my mind, and for a moment I reconsidered buying, but I figured that in the end it would have only been a $2.49 experiment.

And, a week later, that $2.49 experiment has paid itself in droves. The lactose-free milk is like a miracle drink; I cannot stop drinking it. It's like my childhood all over again, drinking three glasses a day. And the best part? No more emergency trips to the toilet at 2 in the morning.

These maracas salt and pepper shakers from ±0 (Plus Minus Zero) are as humorous as they are entertaining while in action.

Fuwarinka

Now here's something interesting. Kanebo recently introduced a line of chewing gums and candies that contain vanilla- and rose-scented chemicals, of which your body will begin secreting 30 minutes after consumption. This reminds me of that Jim Carrey sketch on In Living Color. You know which one I'm talking about?

Chow Chow

As I’m slowly discovering all the nooks and crannies of this city I’m amazed at the constant quality in the cuisine in almost every place I’ve dined at. One of the many reasons that I love about living in New York City is the abundance and variety of foods that one can easily get access to. New Yorkers love to eat, and they love eating out even more. And it shows: there are more restaurants, cafes, food carts, bistros, and eateries here than there are single women at last call at a gay bar. Even within two blocks of my apartment, one can count a total of ten restaurants, a bakery, and three supermarkets. While really good food and be had anywhere if you look hard enough for it, here in New York it’s practically right outside your doorstep.

カレーパン

I had almost forgotten about my other gastronomic addiction. I fell in love with カレーパン - literally 'curry bread' - when I was in Japan some years ago, and have yet to experience the same kind of crispy texture goodness over here in Seattle. Places like Uwajimaya carry some types of カレーパン, and there are curried bao all over the city, but nothing compares to the ones in Japan.
