XL

It's been over a year since I've last visited XL, but I can always appreciate the video projection setup that have going. The room is filled with puffy clouds, and with the curved ceiling one can really feel like they're outside, provided that they have enough alcohol and drugs in their system. I'm a big fan of video installations like the ones at XL, and have been creating several cycling movies that would be perfect to project onto a white wall to create that perfect ambient dinner party atmosphere.

The Revolution is My Boyfriend!!!

I'm re-watching Raspberry Reich tonight. The film, I feel, genuinely tries to bring forth social and political messages by way of explicit pornography, but there is a fine line between fine art and smut it seems. There has to be a way of achieving both with equal success. *Puts on thinking cap*

I'm Feeling Inspired
Today is such a nice day. A most perfect day. The sun is out, people are finally starting to lay off black clothing, and the birds are out. Some fashion photographers took several shots of me while I was walking to the cafe this morning. I don't know what magazine they were working for, since I didn't care to ask, but I hope to God that it's Vice Magazine. It would be a dream come true if I ended up on their DON'Ts section. I can die happy if that did happen.

The Page to the Next Chapter is Halfway Turned
Now that I'm done with Fashion Company, my life has taken on a drastic change. My life no longer consists of trying to beat rush hour traffic and working 40 hours a week, but quite the opposite. I'm lucky if I'm able to drag myself out of bed before 10AM. With freelance gigs coming my way (and others to wrap up) I'm not in a huge rush to get another job--I'm financially secure to last another several months doing nothing but sit on my ass--but something permanent to ground me needs to be coming my way soon. I'm back at that state of transition--emotionally, physically, geographically--and frankly I kinda hate it. Poo.

Drunk People are Funny
I don't go clubbing anymore. Dancing has always been my forte, but laziness coupled with busyness coupled with no finances has kept me out of most clubs these days. Dancing was also one of very few methods with which I get my exercise, and since I can't do yoga in my room for fear of tripping over the uneven floor, my body is slowly going to waste as I type this. What to do? My only solution I can muster up is to go back to swimming. It's been many years since I've actually swam, back and forth in the pool in that meditative state you reach after a few laps. I looked at a few community pools in the area, bought new swimming trunks (damn you, Prada, and your perfectly tailored shorts!), and now all I need is my prescription goggles from Seattle and I can finally hit the water once again and regain that swimmer's body that I've been missing for so long...

Are We Having a Conversation Yet? The Art of Being Laconic

The Tut's Hookah

I'm putting myself on a self-imposed drinking hiatus as of... now. I drank one G&T too many at Royal Oak last week and woke up more disoriented than a gay man at a Paul Smith sample sale. Your choices in bars become very limited when drinking isn't an option, but luckily I read about this new Hookah bar Tut in the Lower East Side that just opened, and coincidentally we ran into it after a few hours in the Back Room (which has become, by the way, my new favorite bar to hangout). I've never had hookah before, and although I don't smoke, it was a fun experience being able to taste pina colada in your lungs. Egyptian chic is going to be the new rage, I tells ya.

My Niche?
Ummm... yeah. It's a little disheartening how much in common I have with all those Condé Nast people.

Claiming Responsibilities
I miss those carefree summer days of screaming Interpol lyrics and prefunking in the car outside the bar. And of sneaking into the park in the middle of the night to get high. And of watching his face while he didn't realize I was watching him. And of laying in the hot grass with some bubble tea next to my side. And of driving to the mountains only to be chased away by giant grasshoppers. And of dancing until the sun came up, at some random rave. And of assuming British identities in order to deter rice-queens. And of poking people's butts while in a drunken stupor. And of spending the night in his arms, two lonely strangers in the middle of nowhere. And of having my skin turn ridiculously dark under the warm glow of the sun.

SeaTown In Da Haus

My parents never cease to amuse me. We made a food offering to our ancestors, as is Buddhist tradition, and in apparent effort to diversify my grandparents' palate for cuisine, my parents decided to make taquitos for the occasion.

My dad woke me up last Friday morning when he blasted Madonna's latest album on the stereo; that was when I first realized that I was home. Even though I still haven't felt that I've fully settled in NYC, Seattle no longer feels like home to me, but rather a place I could seek solace and rest, however temporary it may be. The first visit is always the busiest they say, and I was spending every waking moment driving to places and catching up with friends. Other than that, I only had two definite goals I had to accomplish while I was here: grab a quick burger at Dick's, and eat dinner at Kingfish. I've had Southern cooking all over the South, and even in NYC, but Kingfish is still by far the best Soul restaurant I've eaten at.

It feels as if I never left. As if I had gone into a long period of slumber and have just only woken up.

I truly am spoiled. Spoiled by my family, by my friends, by this city.

Back to NYC.

Guido Mocafico: Venenum

New Yorkers will attend a book party at the drop of a hat. It doesn't matter if you haven't read the book or know anything about the author; the book party is high society's version of a fraternity mixer. Last night's book party was a little more glamourous than most, however. Swiss-born photographer Guido Mocafico had a soiree at Bergdorf's for his new photo book Venenum, a series of photographs of venomous creatures ranging from snakes to spiders to jellyfish. Great colors and composition, but ultimately boring work. Not that this mattered anyway, to the wealthy and beautiful people who attended. The drinks were strong and free, the hors d'oeuvres delicious, and the eye-candy plentiful. I would say out of the 400 socialites, magazine editors, artists, stylists, and celebrities that came to this thing, maybe 30 of them actually knew who the photographer was. People were there just to have a good time, socialize, and network; I finally got to meet some of the people I've heard so much gossip about. There was this 8-foot drag queen who looked like s/he leapt out of the pages of a Nathaniel Hawthorne novel, and s/he was chatting away with a certain famous magazine editor. Such an abnormal sight, only to be witnessed at the phenomenon known as the book party.

Brokeback My Ass
Sometimes I wonder if all of the Brokeback Mountain movie parodies floating around the web is just another subtle, unconscious expression of homophobia. I mean, they're all just so gay.
