Nerve.com is an online magazine founded in 1997 that is dedicated to sex, relationships and culture. It publishes articles, fiction and photography devoted to sex and relationships, and interviews and criticism regarding film, music, books and television. When it launched, Nerve.com’s revenue streams consisted of three main outlets: personal ads, Premium-area subscriptions and licensing (books, games and the like). The previous design stages of the Nerve.com website reflected just that – large, enticing images encouraged readers to sign up for Premium accounts and personals profiles.

However, the online magazine landscape has changed drastically since 1997. With the advent of blogs and a great number of do-it-yourself Content Management Systems, surviving in an online publishing environment means that you need the traffic numbers, and thus, advertising dollars to support your site. One can no longer rely on a subscription-based model. And so, in June 2009, Nerve.com was reorganized and redesigned drastically to make the user experience more streamlined. There was less emphasis on having many images on the site (thus making the site load faster into the browser). In the past each section of the Nerve.com site had its own design style standard; all sections are now streamlined with a universal top menu system for increased familiarity in navigation.

The Premium section, which still relies on subscription revenues, (instead of advertising revenues) has a design that relied on larger imagery.
